motormindz Practices:
CONNECTED CAR
Four Major Trends Shaping Automotive.
Four well-recognized and major disruptive technology trends will continue to shape the automotive industry over at least the next two decades – autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification, and shared ownership models. These four trends are not just influencing exciting new vehicle features & specs – they’re actually laying the foundation for an entirely new product ecosystem shift that will fundamentally change how vehicles are sold, owned, used, serviced, and experienced.
motormindz Connected Practice focuses on the Connectivity Trend, and how it both influences and supports the development of each of the others.
Connectivity, but not just Connectivity.
The core of the Connectivity trend is rooted in the value created by making wireless connections to and from vehicles through the addition of hardware and software that provide insights about drivers, passengers, and vehicles.
In effect, these connections serve both as an enabler and a gateway to each of the other trends.
Both Data & Connection Pathways Needed by the Rest of ACES.
Connectivity will provide the real-time connection, redundancy, reliability, bandwidth, data integrity, and compression required by the safety, quality, reliability, and infallibility requirements of Autonomous Driving.
Connectivity will provide critical infrastructure and connectivity for industrial and commercial transportation which demand extremely high power and flawless operation in very harsh environments where failure is not an option. Ensuring robust connectivity solutions for this mission-critical industry to meet worldwide demand is a must for commercial success of Electrification.
Connectivity provides the location, telemetry, logistical support, mapping support, and fleet management support needed to enable, optimize, and evolve new shared ownership and business models.
Connectivity Becomes Hyperconnectivity.
And, as Connectivity itself progresses to enable and improve underlying infrastructure to support the other trends, it promises to disrupt every part of the automotive business. As these connections multiply, Connectivity becomes Hyperconnectivity.
Hyperconnectivity Provides Opportunity.
OEMs need to carefully plan hardware & software features, rollouts, fixes, and implementations more like big tech, and they need to build access pathways for monetization of connected vehicle data. They also need to champion industry data & ecosystem standards to ensure a smooth growth trajectory for all of the new participants in their connected vehicle ecosystems.
Dealers will need to learn what vehicle data they will have access to, and how to advocate for more. They’ll need to plan for data privacy implications and adopt new data monetization strategies that enhance base offerings by their OEM partners. They’ll need to understand how the data can be used and extended to lift their businesses beyond the connected car space – or they will risk losing customers to dealers who do.
Suppliers need to understand what the OEMs will consider ‘must-owns’ in terms of architecture and infrastructure, and what they’ll want to buy from partners rather than build, and where OEMs will choose to innovate & where they won’t.
Discovery and exploitation of the latest, proven, connected technology solutions that have an edge in these areas will be critical – and these considerations are just the start for players in this space.
